About Habitat for Humanity NWT

For more than a decade, we have been dedicated to providing a hand up to northern families and the opportunity to own an affordable home.

Affordable Housing for All

Vision: A world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.

Mission: To bring people and communities together to provide a hand up to northern families to build strength, stability, and self reliance through affordable home ownership.

Habitat for Humanity Northwest Territories was initially founded by a group of Elks Lodge #314 volunteers who were passionate about bringing the Habitat homeownership model to the Northwest Territories. We were established as a registered charity in 2012.

While initially operated entirely by a dedicated Board of Directors, we have now expanded to have a small but hard-working staff team and we work to build at least two decent, affordable homes for families each year. With the help of volunteers and community partners, we have built homes in the communities of Dettah, Hay River, and Yellowknife.

Habitat for Humanity Northwest Territories is one of 50 independently operated Canadian affiliates. Habitat for Humanity has affiliates in every Canadian province and territory, and works in more than 70 countries around the world - providing safe, affordable housing and advocating for better living conditions and access to affordable housing for all.

Land Acknowledgement

Habitat for Humanity NWT respectfully acknowledges that we work, live, and build on the traditional territories and homeland of the Dene, Inuit and Métis peoples of the Northwest Territories.

We are grateful to the many Indigenous peoples of the NWT for allowing us the opportunity to learn, work and live on their lands.

WSCC Safe Workplace

Habitat for Humanity NWT is recognized as a safe workplace from the Workers Safety and Compensation Commission of the Northwest Territories.

Volunteer with Habitat NWT

We are looking for volunteers who have specific construction skills, as we now use modular homes for our home builds which require specialized skills in carpentry such as building decking and skirting, as well as electrical and plumbing work that must meet specific safety standards. By volunteering with Habitat for Humanity NWT, you can be part of helping to build a North where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
