Meet Stefan & Family
Raising two very active kids, our lives revolve around the things we love most... sports, especially hockey, soccer, and being outdoors. Whether it’s an early morning practice at the rink, a game under the bright lights on Back Bay or Rat Lake, or a weekend exploring the big lake, we’ve always found joy in staying active together. My daughter spent her early years growing up on a houseboat on Great Slave Lake, surrounded by the rhythms of northern life. My son has grown up on land – chasing pucks, soccer balls, and adventure at every turn. Together, they’ve built a childhood rooted in team sports, community, and a love for the outdoors.
For us, hockey isn’t just a sport, it’s a way of life. It’s where friendships are built, where hard work and teamwork take shape, and where my kids have learned confidence, resilience, and the power of community. Between practices, tournaments, outdoor rink games and weekends spent exploring, these shared experiences have also helped strengthen our family bond.
But like many families in Yellowknife, finding a stable and affordable home has been a challenge. Housing costs in the North make it difficult to find a place to truly call home. Becoming a Habitat homeowner means more than words can express. It’s a chance to give my kids a place where they can hang their jerseys on the wall, store their hockey gear without tripping over it, and know that this is their home.
This new home will give us the grounding we need while still keeping us connected to the northern lifestyle we love. We’re incredibly grateful to Habitat for Humanity and everyone who supports this program. This isn’t just a house, it’s a foundation for the future, built by a community that believes in giving families like ours the chance to grow, play, and thrive right here in Yellowknife.
